A Story of Resilience and Hope

My name is Don Darius, and I am a 31-year-old Nyamulenge from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I grew up in Kanogo, Minembwe, Fizi, South Kivu, surrounded by lush hills and vibrant markets. This upbringing instilled in me a passion for business and community. 

Early years

Growing up, I lived with my mother and brothers in a small village. Our home was filled with love, laughter, and stories. I remember waking up to the sound of birds chirping and helping my mother with chores before heading out to play football with friends. The evenings were filled with delicious meals like ugali and fish, and fresh garden vegetables. Life was simple, yet fulfilling. 

After completing secondary school in 2011, I ventured to Kenya, where I worked at Digital Divide Data Kenya Limited for two years. This experience taught me valuable skills and exposed me to diverse cultures. In 2013, I enrolled at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. 

Upon graduation, I returned to my home country and ventured into the cattle business and manual labor. I loved negotiating prices and building relationships with fellow traders. Life was challenging, but fulfilling. My daily life was vibrant and colourful. 

Treacherous life

However, my life took a drastic turn due to ongoing rebel attacks in my country. On September 17, 2019, my village was attacked, and I was separated from my family while fleeing. I sought refuge in Zambia, where I lived for four years. 

Life in Zambia was treacherous, with limited freedom and no support from the government. Yet, I found solace in the kindness of strangers and the warmth of the Zambian people. I continued my business ventures, adapted to local customs, and learned new skills and language. 

In Zambia, I worked as a shopkeeper and discovered a passion for adapting, dealing with locals, and learning new skills. I learned to appreciate the Zambian way of life, emphasising community and hospitality. Despite many challenges, I found joy in simple things. 

New beginnings

My journey to New Zealand began on November 30, 2023, when I arrived with the support of the Approved Sponsor group. Their unwavering assistance bridged the gap between uncertainty and stability. 

Upon arrival, the Approved Sponsor group provided essential support, securing housing, furnishing my home, and facilitating shopping. Their cultural orientation and community introductions eased my transition. 

I started working at Bluestar Jackson on February 12, 2024, and discovered a welcoming environment valuing diversity and inclusivity. My manager is a wonderful person and a great leader. My colleagues have been warm, supportive, and friendly, and I've learned much from them. 

Notably, I acquired specialised skills, such as driving a forklift, and benefited from wellbeing workshops focusing on mental health, stress management, and team building. With the support of the Approved Sponsor group and a generous mentor, I gained the confidence to learn driving. 

Learning to drive was a significant achievement. Passing my restricted driving test on the second attempt opened doors to newfound independence and freedom. This accomplishment has boosted my confidence and enabled me to navigate New Zealand with ease. 

Beyond work, I connected with the wider community and local Kiwis through cultural events, monthly Catholic men's meetings, bi-weekly evening church and sports teams. I broadened my understanding of New Zealand's unique heritage. 

My experiences have revealed surprising aspects of life in New Zealand. The country's stunning natural beauty, friendly people, and emphasis on social and environmental responsibility have left an indelible mark. 

I have learned to love the local food, like fish and chips and pavlova. I made friends with colleagues and neighbours, and we shared stories and laughter over barbecues and dinners. I have embraced the Kiwi culture, valuing adventure, equality, and kindness. 

Looking into the future

As I look to the future, I am filled with optimism. My dreams include pursuing a career in my field, contributing to the community through volunteering, and exploring entrepreneurial opportunities. 

To fellow refugees and migrants, I offer these words of encouragement: stay resilient, embrace new opportunities, cultivate gratitude, and connect with your community. 

I am grateful for the love and support of my fiancée, friends, and community. I proudly look forward to my upcoming wedding and building a happy family, succeeding in my career, and making a positive impact. 

My goals and aspirations are to build a happy family, succeed in my career, and make a positive impact in my community. I want to continue learning, growing, and exploring the world around me. 

In conclusion, my story is one of resilience and hope. The Approved Sponsor group's selflessness has transformed my life, enabling me to rebuild and thrive in New Zealand. Their unwavering support has enabled me to find my footing, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

As I embark on this new chapter, I am reminded that life's challenges can be overcome with determination, community, and hope. My journey serves as a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience and adaptation.

I look forward to continuing to grow, learn, and contribute to my new community, inspired by the kindness and generosity that has welcomed me to this beautiful country.
